Day Three...Exploring by Plane, Hiking and by Boat
The day started at 4 am, we had to get ready and be at the airport by 5:30 am for a plane tour of the Grand Canyon, and it was pretty spectacular. Then we landed and while we waited for the Upper Antelope Canyon hiking tour to start, we watched an Asian woman doing a bunch of weird things, like go to the ATM several times but never take money out, pound back several cups of coffee and then just wonder around the lobby taking bizarre selfies. We didn't realize it at the time, but her behavior was foreshadowing what was to come.Â
We finally got into the back of a truck and bounced along a sandy road to the canyon. It was stunning. Unfortunately, the bizarre behavior of the woman was compounded by the arrival of a man so unaware of himself and the fact that other people were around, it was stunning. I simply refer to him as "the man" because he was completely covered and wore a mask, even for his selfies. He could be anyone. The woman ran around in front of everyone taking selfish selfies while the man just stood in front of everyone with the cheapest, oldest digital camera taking blurry, granulated photos (according to the tour guide) and blocking everyone else from taking photos. The two together were both hilarious and infuriating. It got to the point where Jason would just start cracking up as soon as he heard the man's weird camera picture taking sound...like a beeeew, click...over and over. The man took 30 to 40 bad photos of everything including just pitch darkness...stunning and infuriating. The man, at one point, was told to "move along" by the Navajo tour guide, but the man didn't understand until I said "you're in everyone else's shot" to which he moved a couple of inches which actually accomplished nothing. I must have taken at least 10 or more shots with the man or his hand and camera in it because at times he would just hold it over his head taking photos, beeew, click. I'm not sure how he had the amount of storage it took to take 30 bad photos every time, but he never took one photo, it was always at least 10 and up to 40.Â
The tour guide was very interesting and told us stories about how the Navajo people would hide in these caverns and how some caverns are considered sacred ground to the Navajo. She also talked about how proud her people were of their role in "winning World War 2" (as the Navajo was involved in the "Wind Talkers" project).
We left the canyon, after the Asian woman took her last few bizarre selfies, blocking the entire group while she did so (another foreshadowing) and we hiked up to the truck. While hiking I said to Jason that I miss when people had film and they only took a couple of photos. The tour guide overheard me and asked me what I meant. I said, I miss when people didn't take 30 or 40 photos at the same time, when I turned the man was walking behind me and I locked eyes with him, we both knew who I was talking about.Â
We rode the truck back to the lobby, had our lunch and then got on another bus that took us to a boat tour. I told Jason to avoid sitting near the Asian lady and the man, of course, both of them managed to get on the boat first and ended up sitting next to each other.
The boat tour was ok...way too long, but interesting at times. The best part was stopping at a spot to go into the Colorado River water and splash around and then go look at petroglyphs. Hallway through the tour, the woman asked the tour guide how long it would take to get back because she had to go to the bathroom, the tour guide said there was still some ways to go, the woman said ok, but was making faces, so the tour guide stopped the boat and pulled to a bank and told the woman to go in the brush, holding up the entire group for the second time. We got to see rams chilling in the shade and other cool rock formations. Finally, we made it back to the boat launch (I only closed my eyes briefly on the boat trip, I didn't not fall asleep) and onto the bus. I told Jason I think the woman and the man should get together, they deserve each other, he thought so as well.Â
The bus ride was 2 hours and 30 minutes long. It would seem that the woman is a "YouTuber" and her photos and videos were for her channel. The man is a teacher. The woman and the man sat near each other and talked the whole way, loudly, maybe a love connection?Â
We stopped at a souvenir store with snacks and drinks along the way. We were told to only take 20 minutes, at 20 minutes everyone was back except 2 people, so the bus driver went in to look for them. When he left, the woman got off the bus and walked away. 2 minutes later the bus driver and the couple came back ready to leave, but the whole bus was held up because the woman was gone...we waited for a while until the woman came back...the woman held up the group again, for the third time. We got back on the road, and made it back to the airport. Along the way we saw elk, deer, and a coyote. We ended up eating at Wendy's again for dinner (it's the only affordable place here), and went to the hotel room. I went back out to take more sunset photos, got caught in a monsoon rainstorm and watched the lightning from under a shelter. I came back to the room, cleaned up and went to bed.Â
Jason II's Version:
Today we started really early, it was at 4 in the morning. We got ready then went to the car to go to the airport which we sat at for basically an hour than got onto the flight. It was an hour long and took us across the canyon, this was my favorite part of the day. After that we got to an airport in the middle of the canyon and waited for our next thing to start. At this time there are some characters that came about, there was a Vietnamese woman and an Indian guy and they both were super annoying the whole trip. They ended up getting on our ride to these same things, they are made from water moving away the rocks, it was fun but the two characters kept getting in the way of everyone. After that we then had our brunch and got ready for the river ride. We had to go through a TSA type thing and then get on a buss. We then drive to the area and got on the boat. The tour was ok, I liked when they let us go into he river water and see the hieroglyphics. After looking at the canyon for so long it just got boring and I wasn't enjoying it that much. After we got done we rode the bus back to the airport that we started at and saw some animals on the way. After we got off we went to Wendy's for the 1,000,000 time and then went back to the hotel. Dad went out to do something and I just wanted to get to bed because I was tired from running around the canyon for 16 hours.Â
