Adventures of Captain America

Captain America in Paradise

I thought it would be fun to bring a Captain America action figure, that my son gave me when he was younger, with me on my trip to San Pedro, Belize.

I brought Captain America with me to the beach. We hung out for awhile, played beach jenga, and found a bunch of conch shells, but we couldn't spend all of our time at the beach, we had to go do some things...like go shopping for essentials and get some food!

I went shopping and got some very good rum. Cap isn't a drinker, but he really liked the bottle...I don't have any idea why...

Ol' Cap learned the hard way that sometimes hot sauce burns you twice...

(Yes, I did bring one of my cast iron skillets with me to San Pedro as you can see in the background...I just like cooking with my own cast iron!)

We got food!

Naturally, the food was amazing.

The fresh tortillas were Captain's favorite!

Throughout the tip, I tried a bunch of different foods.

I was a big fan of the stewed chicken, gringas and pupusas!

The Captain wanted to go out and meet the people of La Isla Bonita!

I decided that I would take the Captain out with me and introduce him to folks that I met and see if they would be willing to take a photo while holding him. These are the folks that were willing. Interestingly enough, it also gives a good cross section of the folks in San Pedro...

The Expat

I met this expat from the Austin area while trying to decide if tacos or stewed chicken sounded better. He moved to San Pedro, Belize a few years ago. After deciding that he wanted out of the rat race in the USA, he sold everything he had and brought his wife and daughter to the island. They got an apartment, and his daughter goes to school in San Pedro. When asked what he does, he said: "Be the best husband and father I can be." He doesn't have a work visa, but thinks he may try to get one in a year or two, until then, he is using the money he brought with him. He said that he thinks he can live for 40 more years on the money he brought. He had the most impressive set of teeth I've seen in awhile!

The Expat's Wife and Daughter

As I was walking away from the Expat, he said, "Hey man, you should go get a photo with my wife and daughter! They will think this is awesome too!" I walked up to his wife and said, "Your husband said that you would want to take a photo with Captain America." The Expat had followed me (I didn't realize), and said "Yeah! Get a pic with the Captain!" The daughter stopped watching the movie that was being shown in the plaza long enough to get her picture taken, then she ran off with her popcorn in hand with the other children of the island and finished watching Pus in Boots 2. The town council was showing the movie and providing a stewed chicken dinner to the kids, the Expat said that it was one of the reasons he loves living on the island.

What is a "Scabab"?

Next stop was to get some food. There are no American fast food restaurants in San Pedro, and "fast food" just means that it is food that is prepared quickly, a different definition than I was used to. There are a lot of restaurants around the island that say "fast food" as part of their name. I saw a sign and was curious...what is a "Scabab"?

The Restaurant Owners

I went to the table of "Estela's Fast Food" to ask about "Scababs". I ultimately found out that it was the phonetic  spelling of how the islanders pronounce Kabobs. I was offered a sample of pork ribs and decided that I had found what I was going to have for dinner. The husband and wife team put a generous portion of rice and beans  and a couple of fresh tortillas in a container and then asked if I wanted the pork ribs cut up. I said sure and the wife proceeded to cube the ribs (bone and all) with a cleaver. Truth be told, I wasn't expecting this woman to produce a cleaver and start wailing on the ribs. I ate my food and it was very, very good...and yes, I realize that this Texan ordered Bar-B-Q in Belize!

The Bar Owner

After eating, I started walking around and heard a man yelling at me from a second floor window. It was The Bar Owner yelling: "Hey, you should support local businesses! Come into my bar! You'll have a good time!" So I walked up the stairs and was greeted by the Bar Owner who was also singing karaoke, very loudly, and very badly. He asked me where I was from and I told him Texas. He said "Texas! I know Texas!" and in mid song changed the song to country music. I asked if he would take a photo with Captain America, and he said that he absolutely would, he loves America! I ordered a Belikin beer (a beer made in Belize that has signs EVERYWHERE) and we chatted a while. He then said "Free Beers" and brought me another beer. At this point two other bar customers came over and joined the conversation while another customer sat at the bar and just stared at me with a drunk smile and kept waving at me awkwardly (if you look in the photo, he is the one in the light blue shirt with the grey hair). The Bar Owner wondered off to fiddle with the karaoke machine and then started singing a terrible rendition of whatever country song he was singing, which at this point was playing on full volume. One of the bar customers starting showing photos of his wife and kids and the other told me that the free beers were a lie...the bar owner never gives out free beers. I decided that it was time to go to the bathroom and leave. The bathrooms in Belize charge $1BZ to use (fifty cents American), and that was written on the door. I went to the bathroom, one of the worst I've been in, and came out to pay the tab. The bar tender (not the owner) said it was going to be $16BZ, but I only had $13BZ in cash, so I said I'll have to use my credit card. At that point, the owner came over and said: "No, no, we'll just take the cash, no need to run the credit card! American's like getting tips, no? My bar is giving YOU a tip!" I left the bar very amused, kind of feeling like I dodged a bullet because the whole set up and scene was shady AF, but I had another story and photo!

The Security Worker

I was out of cash, but wasn't ready to call it a night yet. A lot of places are cash only, so I went back to my room to get more cash out of the safe. On the way out, I noticed the Security Worker. He was sitting on a chair and doing things on his phone. When I came by, he said "Hi, are you having a good night?" I said yes, and that I was seeing if folks wanted to take photos with Captain America. He asked what is Captain America, and I showed him and tried to explain the Marvel story to him. He laughed and said that he would take a photo.

The DJ

Next, I went to a resort bar that had a DJ. He was playing music and dancing around. I asked if he wanted to take a photo with Captain America and he said "Absolutely!" So he stopped bouncing just long enough to take Cap and then starting dancing again with him.

Me

It is very important to stay hydrated while in Central America, so I had to go to the bathroom again. This bathroom was free, because it wasn't downtown and it was catering more towards tourists. It also was actually clean!

Tourist Ladies

There were two groups of ladies dancing at the resort bar. This group and a group of black ladies. Neither group was from Belize. I actually have no idea where they were from. It was really loud. The white tourist ladies got together to get their photo and I asked if the black ladies wanted to do a photo. One lady said she did and took the Captain, one lady was on the fence and one lady said "Hell, no!" The other two didn't want to do the photo without their friend, so there is no photo with the black tourist ladies.

Street Food Vendors

It had been a long and fun night, and it was time for some late night food. Luckily, I knew where there was a street taco truck that was open from 5 PM to midnight! I got 3 tacos that were so good for $10BZ. While the mother was preparing my tacos, the daughter told me that she goes to college during the day at the local island college and works with her mother at night. As the food was being cooked, I asked if they would be willing to pose with Captain America. The daughter said that they both would like to pose and that she thought the whole idea was really funny. It was 11:30 PM. The daughter said they were getting ready for the rush, apparently their busiest time is 5 minutes to midnight, because pretty much the entire island closes at midnight, they are normally the last place open for folks that get hungry at night.

That was the end of the day for me and the end of the adventures of Captain America in San Pedro.
